Open competition for a new Logging Museum & Wetland Centre in Fetsund, Norway

In Fetsund along the Glomma River, a new destination and meeting place will be created, dedicated to conveying the moving history of timber rafting and the important role of wetlands in our living environment. Log rafting was a dangerous and dynamic job and the museum and competence centre convey this drama with a facade of angled logs inspired by situations when logs got stuck in waterways, the so-called "tømmervase". The logs on the outside of the facade create an almost borderless transition between the surrounding nature and the wetland landscape.

The building is given an elongated rectangular volume with the long side facing the river to maximise contact with the water. The cantilevered roof with its dynamic logs creates a fluid transition between outside and inside. The wooden logs patinate and harmonize with the surrounding trees and nature. The playful expression of the logs creates curiosity and a sense of discovery. Whether you come from land or water, you can step onto the bridge and the wooden deck that connect the area in an exciting, varied and interactive experience.
